Lagging Donations Leave Non-Profit Wondering When they Will Wander In

The Home for Little Wanderers Reminds Community of Most-Needed Items for Older Children

Holiday donations are down at The Home for Little Wanderers' Jamaica Plain Toy Room. With less than a week to go for The Home's Big Wishes Holiday Gift Drive, the child and family service agency is worried that the wishes of some of its children, especially teenagers, may not be met this holiday season.

"Games are usually stacked high and the coat racks are traditionally overflowing at this time of year," said Colleen Fitzpatrick, The Home for Little Wanderers' Director of Volunteer & Community Outreach who has spent the past four holiday seasons working out of the Toy Room. "This week has been especially slow. As a result we've had to cancel volunteer groups because there is nothing for them to sort. The coat racks are sparse and the tables are pretty bare."

"We need the community's help. This is an important week for us because it is traditionally our busiest in the Toy Room and it allows us to gauge how many wishes we will be able to meet," said Lisa Rowan-Gillis, Vice President of Development and Public Relations, The Home for Little Wanderers. "This is a tough holiday season for many people and we’re seeing more teenagers and families asking for essentials."

The Home for Little Wanderers' "Top 10 Most-Needed Holiday Donations" list includes the following essential items for children and families:

  1. Gift cards
  2. Hooded sweatshirts for older youth
  3. Coats
  4. Ethnically diverse dolls
  5. Flannel pants (large sizes)
  6. Balls (basketball, soccer, football)
  7. Products for all hair and skin types
  8. Fleece socks (adult sizes)
  9. Bath towels and bed linens
  10. Age appropriate DVDs (no R-Rated movies)
