The Home Celebrates Completion of $18 million Project to Build New School and Residences in Walpole Ribbon-cutting Ceremony at Longview Farm On Monday, November 19, 2012, The Home celebrated the completion of an $18 million construction project to build a new state-of-the-art special education school and residences at its 166-acre Longview Farm campus in Walpole, Massachusetts at a ribbon cutting ceremony. The new facility will provide up to 80 youth (40 day students and 40 residents) aged 5-18 with a vastly improved environment where they can live, learn and heal. Children in The Home’s care are in the custody of the Department of Children and Families and are generally characterized as having emotional, behavioral, and/or learning difficulties. In August 2012, The Home’s oldest and best-known program at the Knight Children’s Center in Jamaica Plain was moved to the new campus. “This transformation of The Home as we enter our Third Century is the largest in our long history and the most significant since we opened the doors to the Knight Children’s Center almost 100 years ago,” said Joan Wallace-Benjamin, President and CEO, The Home for Little Wanderers. “The new facilities will allow The Home to provide a far superior environment for children to learn and grow.” The newly renovated and expanded Longview Farm campus includes four new cottages and a 31,000 square foot addition to the educational facility designed to accommodate both an upper and lower school. Campus amenities include an outdoor swimming pool, fishing pond, hiking trails, fruit trees, vegetable gardens and a Project Adventure Course. “As an organization, The Home for Little Wanderers has always embraced change,” said John Hailer, Chairman, Board of Directors, The Home for Little Wanderers, and President and CEO, Natixis Global Asset Management. “What began more than 200 years ago as a home for young girls has grown to one of the largest human services providers in New England, and this move will allow the Home to expand that reach and deepen its commitment to the city of Boston and the Commonwealth.” The Home for Little Wanderers expansion was made possible through lead sponsors Yawkey Foundation, State Street Corporation and Natixis Global Asset Management and over 1400 individuals, corporations, and foundations.
