OUTGOING MAYOR THOMAS M. MENINO MAKES DONATION DURING VISIT TO BOSTON'S OLDEST THRIFT SHOP A "Suited" Occasion Pays Tribute to Mayor's Support of Local Non-Profits, the Community and Helping At-risk Youth at The Home for Little Wanderers It was a suited occasion to honor Boston’s longest serving Mayor for his commitment to local non-profits, the community and helping at-risk youth. On Saturday, November 16th, Mayor Thomas M. Menino made a special visit to The Thrift Shop of Boston at 17 Corinth Street in Roslindale where he donated two Jos. A. Bank suits, two Brooks Brothers shirts and four ties, worn during his administration, to benefit The Home for Little Wanderers. Staff and volunteers from The Thrift Shop and The Home recognized the Mayor for his dedication to the area’s non-profits and the revitalization of Roslindale through Roslindale Village Main Streets. Mayor Menino’s suits will go on display in The Thrift Shop of Boston’s holiday window display, to pay tribute to the Mayor and his support of The Home for Little Wanderers throughout the years and many holiday seasons. Later this year, this donation will be sold or auctioned to raise funds for The Home which serves some of the most vulnerable children and families in Massachusetts. “I’m thrilled to be here today in Boston’s oldest thrift shop to bring attention to such a worthy cause,” Mayor Menino said. “The work The Home for Little Wanderers does to strengthen families and keep our children safe is so important for our City, especially with the holiday season right around the corner.” “We’re thrilled to recognize the Mayor for his commitment to the Roslindale community and his dedication to Boston-area youth and non-profits like The Home for Little Wanderers,” said Anne Robertson, volunteer President of The Thrift Shop of Boston and a longtime volunteer. “As an independent non-profit working in the City of Boston for 87 years, The Thrift Shop is pleased to acknowledge all of Mayor Menino’s support during his tenure. Our move to Roslindale Square in 2000 was made possible because of the Mayor and Roslindale Village Main Streets’ support. The people in this community are the ones who keep us going and allow us to make a positive impact in the lives of some of the state’s most vulnerable children and families every day.” “Through the generous support of partners like Mayor Menino, The Thrift Shop, and Boston residents, we are able to invest in the future of our youth and expand our network of services which will allow them to thrive and succeed,” said Joan Wallace-Benjamin, President and CEO, The Home for Little Wanderers. As a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the children and families served by The Home for Little Wanderers, The Thrift Shop of Boston has provided generous financial support by raising more than $750,000 since the collaboration began for the nation’s oldest child and family service agency. Proceeds from sales at The Thrift Shop have helped The Home to provide annual services to more than 7,000 children and families living in at-risk circumstances throughout Boston and Eastern Massachusetts. Today, The Thrift Shop is operated by two dedicated full-time staff members, three part-time staff, and a wonderful group of volunteers, some of whom have been working there for many years. Located in the heart of Roslindale Square, The Thrift Shop is conveniently located between Belgrade Avenue and Washington Street and is accessible by Commuter Rail and many bus routes.
