Delta Sigma Theta Helps With Day of Service Transforming Communities through Public Service and Social Action a Key Focus of 49th Eastern Regional Conference in Boston Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the single largest African-American women’s organization in the country, today announced that it is teaming up with The Home for Little Wanderers (The Home), the nation’s oldest and one of New England’s largest child welfare agencies, to raise awareness and support for at-risk youth, including those who are in need of foster care and adoption. Through a wide network of support, The Home’s programs touch the lives of some of the most vulnerable children and families in Massachusetts. The collaboration is an extension of Delta Sigma Theta’s Foster Care and Adoption Initiative in its Eastern Region, and will roll out in conjunction with the Sorority’s 49th Eastern Regional Conference, which takes place August 14-17, 2014 in Boston at the Hynes Convention Center. A pre-conference Day of Service will take place on Wednesday, August 13th, whereby members of Delta Sigma Theta will visit youth at The Home’s Harrington House group home in Mission Hill. The event will include a variety of fun-filled enrichment and recreational activities, including an ice-cream social. To further support The Home’s mission, the Delta Research & Educational Foundation (DREF) will sponsor a 5K Run/Walk around the historic Boston Common on Saturday, August 16th, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit The Home for Little Wanderers. A formal presentation of the donation will take place on Thursday, August 14th at the Sheraton Hotel Grand Ballroom during the Welcome Reception to kick-off the conference, at which time Delta Sigma Theta will also formally announce its donation of nearly 1,000 backpacks to The Home, just in time for back-to-school. “As an organization committed to public service, we are honored to partner with The Home for Little Wanderers to support the essential work it does to affect positive change among the diverse populations it serves,” said Robin Jacobs, Eastern Regional Director, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. “Through this collaboration we not only hope to raise public awareness for foster care and adoption, but also empower youth and families through social action.” “The Home’s ongoing mission is to provide safe havens that help children and families thrive and succeed,” said Meredith Bryan, The Home’s Vice President for Development and Communications. “We are proud to collaborate with Delta Sigma Theta in a shared effort to enrich the lives of of the most vulnerable children and families in our community.” |
